Our Wellness Policy
Nutrition
Nutrition is a basic part of being a healthy person. Children cannot be expected to be attentive without proper nourishment. Eating breakfast every school morning will help prevent headaches and stomachaches that can occur. If making time to provide your child breakfast before school is difficult, please consider ordering your child’s breakfast through the National School Lunch Program.
In efforts to confront the rising rates of overweight and obesity among children and youth in our schools, the Diocese of Tucson has developed a Wellness Policy. This policy sets nutrition standards for meals provided to students in the school setting and is modeled after the State of Arizona Department of Health Services Wellness Policy for Schools. St Joseph Catholic School has implemented this policy. As a result; we strive to provide a breakfast and lunch program which adheres to these standards. We have also established some guidelines for acceptable foods for classroom parties.
The main goals of the nutrition standards are to serve meals which are low in sugars and fats; to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables; and to make meals appealing to students. For classroom parties, parents are asked to provide fewer sugary, fatty snack foods and more healthful fun foods such as fruits, nuts, veggies, cheese, etc. We also ask parents who send lunches for their children to focus on healthy foods and not to send sodas or candies. We ask parents to limit sending in fast food lunches for special occasions such as a birthday.
